আমি যাদেরকে কিতাব দান করেছি, তারা তাকে চেনে, যেমন করে চেনে নিজেদের পুত্রদেরকে। আর নিশ্চয়ই তাদের একটি সম্প্রদায় জেনে শুনে সত্যকে গোপন করে।
Those to whom We gave the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognise him (Muhammad SAW or the Ka’bah at Makkah) as they recongise their sons. But verily, a party of them conceal the truth while they know it – [i.e. the qualities of Muhammad SAW which are written in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)].
الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْرِفُونَهُ كَمَا يَعْرِفُونَ أَبْنَاءهُمْ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقاً مِّنْهُمْ لَيَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ
Allatheena ataynahumu alkitaba yaAArifoonahu kama yaAArifoona abnaahum wa-inna fareeqan minhum layaktumoona alhaqqa wahum yaAAlamoona
YUSUFALI: The people of the Book know this as they know their own sons; but some of them conceal the truth which they themselves know.
PICKTHAL: Those unto whom We gave the Scripture recognise (this revelation) as they recognise their sons. But lo! a party of them knowingly conceal the truth.
SHAKIR: Those whom We have given the Book recognize him as they recognize their sons, and a party of them most surely conceal the truth while they know (it).
KHALIFA: Those who received the scripture recognize the truth herein, as they recognize their own children. Yet, some of them conceal the truth, knowingly.
১৪৬। কিতাবধারী লোকেরা এই [সত্যকে] সেরূপ জানে, যেরূপ তারা নিজেদের সন্তানদের চেনে ১৫১। কিন্তু তাদের এক দল জেনে শুনে সত্যকে গোপন করে।
১৫১। কিতাবধারী জাতিরা এই সত্যকে এমনভাবে চেনে যেমন তারা তাদের সন্তানদের চেনে। কারণ তাদের ধর্মগ্রন্থ, তাদের কৃষ্টি, ঐতিহ্য সবই সেই এক সত্যের উপরে প্রতিষ্ঠিত যা তাদের ধর্মের নূতন রূপকে স্বাগতম জানাতে সাহায্য করে। (কারণ এই রূপ সেই একই আল্লাহ্র নির্দেশে পরিবর্তিত ও সময়োপযোগী করে সংশোধিত। এরপরে আর কোনও জীবন-দর্শনের প্রয়োজন নেই-এটি সর্বকালের মানুষের জন্য একটি সম্পূর্ণ গ্রন্থ)। কোন কোন অনুবাদকের মতে ‘this’ বা এই শব্দটি আমাদের নবীকে ইঙ্গিত করে বলা হয়েছে। তাহলে এ আয়াতটির অর্থ দাঁড়ায় যে কিতাবধারী জাতিরা মুহম্মদকে সেরকম ভালভাবে জানে যেমন তারা তাদের সন্তানদের জানে। তারা জানে তিনি সত্যের প্রচারক, তারা জানে তিনি ইব্রাহীমের ধর্ম প্রচার করেছেন। তারা এও জানে যে তার বর্ণনাই তাদের ধর্মগ্রন্থে পূর্বেই বলা হয়েছে। কিন্তু অন্ধকার ও স্বার্থপরতা তাদের সত্য গোপন করতে এবং তাদের ধর্মগ্রন্থের বিপরীত কাজ করতে উদ্বুদ্ধ করে।
