আমি তাদের পূর্বে বহু সম্প্রদায়কে ধ্বংস করেছি, তারা এদের অপেক্ষা অধিক শক্তিশালী ছিল এবং দেশে-বিদেশে বিচরণ করে ফিরত। তাদের কোন পলায়ন স্থান ছিল না।
And how many a generation We have destroyed before them, who were stronger in power than them, and (when Our Torment came) they ran for a refuge in the land! Could they find any place of refuge (for them to save themselves from destruction)?
وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا فَنَقَّبُوا فِي الْبِلَادِ هَلْ مِن مَّحِيصٍ
Wakam ahlakna qablahum min qarnin hum ashaddu minhum batshan fanaqqaboo fee albiladi hal min maheesin
YUSUFALI: But how many generations before them did We destroy (for their sins),- stronger in power than they? Then did they wander through the land: was there any place of escape (for them)?
PICKTHAL: And how many a generation We destroyed before them, who were mightier than these in prowess so that they overran the lands! Had they any place of refuge (when the judgment came)?
SHAKIR: And how many a generation did We destroy before them who were mightier in prowess than they, so they went about and about in the lands. Is there a place of refuge?
KHALIFA: Many a generation before them, who were more powerful, we annihilated. They searched the land; did they find an escape?
৩৬। আমি তাদের পূর্বে আরও কত মানব গোষ্ঠিকে ধ্বংস করেছি [তাদের পাপের জন্য ], – যারা ছিলো তাদের অপেক্ষা অধিক ক্ষমতাবান ৪৯৭৩। তারা দেশে দেশে ঘুরে বেড়াত। তারা পালাবার কোন স্থান পেয়েছিলো কি ?
৪৯৭৩। মুত্তাকী বা পূণ্যাত্মাদের বা গুণসম্পন্ন যারা তাদের পুরষ্কারের ঘোষণা দেয়া হয়েছে, দেখুন [২৬ : ৮৯], [ ৩৭ : ৮৪ ], [ ৫০: ৩৩ ] আয়াত সমূহ। অপর পক্ষে যারা পাপী ও শুধুমাত্র পার্থিব জীবনকেই শ্রেষ্ঠ বলে মনে করে তাদের শেষ পরিণতি কি ? তাদের পরিণতি পৃথিবীর অতীত ইতিহাস থেকে শিক্ষা নিতে বলা হয়েছে। কবির ভাষায়, ” হে অতীত তুমি কথা কও যুগে যুগে।” কত শক্তিশালী জাতি, জনপদ, সময়ের পরিক্রমায় বিলিন হয়ে যায় – শুধু রয়ে যায় তাদের গল্প কাহিনী। তাদের পতনের ইতিহাস একটাই – আর তা হচ্ছে তাদের পাপ কাজ। পাপের পরিণতিকে বাধা দিতে সক্ষম কেউ নয়। এ কথা পার্থিব জীবনের জন্য যেমন সত্য, ঠিক তদ্রূপ সত্য পারলৌকিক জীবনের জন্য। পরলোকের জীবনে পাপীদের পরিণতি ইহলোক অপেক্ষা আরও নিকৃষ্ট যার বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে ২৪ – ২৫ নং আয়াতে।
