তারা কি পৃথিবীতে ভ্রমণ করেনি? করলে দেখত, তাদের পূর্ববর্তীদের কি পরিণাম হয়েছে। তারা তাদের চেয়ে সংখ্যায় বেশী এবং শক্তি ও কীর্তিতে অধিক প্রবল ছিল, অতঃপর তাদের কর্ম তাদেরকে কোন উপকার দেয়নি।
Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the End of those before them? They were more numerous than these and superior in strength and in the traces (they have left) in the land: Yet all that they accomplished was of no profit to them.
أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ كَانُوا أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُمْ وَأَشَدَّ قُوَّةً وَآثَارًا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَمَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
Afalam yaseeroo fee al-ardi fayanthuroo kayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablihim kanoo akthara minhum waashadda quwwatan waatharan fee al-ardi fama aghna AAanhum ma kanoo yaksiboona
YUSUFALI: Do they not travel through the earth and see what was the End of those before them? They were more numerous than these and superior in strength and in the traces (they have left) in the land: Yet all that they accomplished was of no profit to them.
PICKTHAL: Have they not travelled in the land to see the nature of the consequence for those before them? They were more numerous than these, and mightier in power and (in the) traces (which they left behind them) in the earth. But all that they used to earn availed them not.
SHAKIR: Have they not then journeyed in the land and seen how was the end of those before them? They were more (in numbers) than these and greater in strength and in fortifications in the land, but what they earned did not avail them.
KHALIFA: Have they not roamed the earth and noted the consequences for those who preceded them? They used to be greater in number, greater in power, and possessed a greater legacy on earth. Yet, all their achievements did not help them in the least.
৮২। তারা কি পৃথিবী ভ্রমণ করে না ও দেখে না যে তাদের পূর্ববর্তীদের কি পরিণাম হয়েছিলো ? [পৃথিবীতে] তারা সংখ্যায় এদের অপেক্ষা অধিক ছিলো ; এবং শক্তিতে ও কীর্তিতে [ যা তারা রেখে গেছে ] তারা ছিলো অধিক শ্রেষ্ঠ। তবুও তারা যা অর্জন করেছে তা তাদের কোন উপকারে আসে নাই ৪৪৫৮।
৪৪৫৮। দেখুন আয়াত [ ৯ : ৬৯ ]। এই আয়াতে আল্লাহ্ ইতিহাস থেকে শিক্ষা গ্রহণ করতে বলেছেন, “পৃথিবী ভ্রমণ ” – অর্থাৎ প্রাচীন সভ্যতার ধ্বংসাবশেষ পর্যলোচনা করে শিক্ষা গ্রহণ করা। পৃথিবীতে বহু জাতি গত হয়েছে যারা জ্ঞানে , বিজ্ঞানে , সভ্যতা সংস্কৃতিতে, র্কীতিতে শক্তি ও ক্ষমতাতে ছিলো প্রবল – কিন্তু তারা আল্লাহকে এবং আল্লাহ্র অপ্রতিরোধ্য আইনকে ভুলে গিয়েছিলো। ফলে তাদের কোন সাফল্যই স্থায়ী হতে পারে নাই। শেষ পর্যন্ত তারা ধ্বংস হয়ে কালের অতলে হারিয়ে যায়।
মানুষ অন্ধ গর্ব ও উদ্ধত অহংকারে সর্ব কৃতিত্বের দাবী করে। কিন্তু মানুষের বর্তমান সাফল্যের ভিত্তি অতীতের কর্মফলের উপরে নির্ভরশীল। পূর্ববর্তীদের কার্যের দরুণই বর্তমানে সাফল্য লাভ সম্ভব হয়েছে। সে একক কৃতিত্বের অধিকারী নয় এই সাধারণ সত্যকে সে ভুলে যায়। দম্ভ ও অহংকার তাদের অতীত থেকে শিক্ষা গ্রহণের প্রধাণ অন্তরায়। দেখুন আয়াত [ ৪০ : ২১ ] ও টিকা ৪৩৮৭। যে যুক্তি উপরের আয়াতে আরম্ভ করা হয়েছিলো ; এই আয়াতে তা শেষ করা হয়েছে।
