Bande Mataram

Translated by W. H. Lee, I.C.S.

My Mother-land I sing !

Her splendid streams, her glorious trees,

The Zephyr from the far-off Vindhyan heights

Her fields of waving corn,

The rapturous radiance of her moonlit nights,

The trees and flowers that flame afar,

The smiling days that sweetly vocal are

The happy blessed Mother-land !

Her will by seventy million arms upheld,

Her strength no man scorn :

Thou art my head, thou art my heart,

My life and soul art thou !

My song, my worship and my art

Before thy feet I bow !

As Durga, scourge of all thy foes,

As Lakshmi, bowered in flower

That in the water grows,

As Vani, wisdom, power,

The source of all our might,

Our every temple doth thy form uphold

Unequalled, tender, happy, pure

Of splendid streams, of glorious trees,

My mother-land I sing !

The stainless charm that shall endure

And verdant banks and wholesome breeze

That with her praises sing !*

Bande mataram

(Addressed to India)

Translated by Sri Raj Narayan Bose

I worship thee, O Mother !

Thee the nice-watered, bearing nice fruits, cooled by zephyrs,

Verdant with the corn-plant,

Whose nights are cheered by the silver moonlight,

Whose bosom is decked with trees, bearing flowers in full bloom,

The smiling, the melodiously-speaking,

The giver of happiness, the giver of boons, the Mother.

Thou art terrible with the shouts of two hundred millions

And sharp swords seized by four hundred millions of hands ;

Who says, Mother, thou art weak ?

I bow before thee, endowed with great strength, the salvatrees,

The vanquisher of enemies, the Mother.

Thou art knowledge, thou art religion,

Thou art the heart, thou the vitals,

Thou the life in the body.

Thou art the strength of our arms,

Thou art the feelings of love and veneration in our hearts ;

From : Old Hindu’s Hope or A Proposal for the Establishment of a Hindu National Congress.

Thine is the image

Set up in temple after temple.

Thou art Durga, bearing the ten weapons,

Thou art Lakshmi who dwellest in the lotus bud,

Thou art Saraswati, the giver of knowledge,

We pay homage to thee ;

We adore thee, O Mother !

The goddess of fortune, the pure and the peerless,

The nice-watered, bearing nice fruits, the Mother ;

We adore thee again and again,

The verdant, the simple, the well-decked,

All bearing, all cherishing, the Mother.

Vande Mataram

Translated by Nagendra Nath Gupta

Obeisance to thee, Mother !

Sweet is thy water, sweet are thy fruits, cool is the

sandal-scented breeze from the south,

Green are thy cornfields, Mother !

Gladdened are thy nights by the white moonlight,

Decked art thou by the trees with flowers in bloom,

Sweet-smiling, sweet-spoken,

Bestower of happiness and boons, Mother !

Terrible with the shouts rising from seventy million

throats,

Twice seventy million hands armed with edged swords,

Why do thy call thee feeble, Mother !

Possessed of mighty strength, saviour, I bow to thee !

Vanquisher of the enemy, Mother !

Thou art knowledge, the faith art thou,

Thou art the heart, the core thou,

Thou art the life in the body,

Thou art the strength in the arm,

The devotion in the heart,

Thy image we build in temple after temple !

Thou art Durga holding ten weapons,

Lakshmi art thou seated on the petals of the lotus,

Saraswati thou, the giver of knowledge, to thee I bow,

I bow to thee, Lakshmi, the pure, the peerless,

Sweet-watered, sweet-fruited Mother !

Obeisance to thee, Mother !

Green-hued, unsophisticated, sweet-smiling, ornamented,

Nourisher of the Earth, Mother !*

Bande mataram

Translated by Sri Aurobindo

Mother, I bow to thee !

Rich with thy hurrying streams,

Bright with thy orchard gleams,

Cool with thy winds of delight,

Dark fields waving, Mother of might,

Mother free.

Glory of moonlight dreams,

Over thy branches and lordly streams,

Clad in thy blossoming trees,

Mother, giver of ease,

Laughing low and sweet !

Mother, I kiss thy feet,

Speaker sweet and low !

Mother, to thee I bow.

Who hath said thou art weak in they lands,

When the swords flash out in seventy million hands

And seventy million voices roar

Thy dreadful name from shore to shore ?

With many strengths who art mighty and stored,

To thee I call, Mother and Lord !

Thou who savest, arise and save !

To her I cry who ever her foemen drave

Back from plain and sea

And shook herself free.

Thou art wisdom, thou art law,

Thou our heart, our soul, our breath,

Thou the love divine, the awe

In our hearts that conquers death.

Thine the strength that nerves the arm,

Thine the beauty, thine the charm.

Every image made divine

In our temples is but thine.

Thou art Durga, Lady and Queen,

With her hands that strike and her swords of sheen,

Thou art Lakshmi lotus-throned,

And the Muse a hundred-toned.

Pure and perfect without peer,

Mother, lend thine ear.

Rich with thy hurrying streams,

Bright with thy orchard gleams,

Dark of hue O candid-fair

In thy soul, with jewelled hair

And thy glorious smile divine,

Loveliest of all earthly lands,

Showering wealth from well-stored hands !

Mother, mother mine !

Mother sweet, I bow to thee

Mother great and free !

Bande mataram

Translated in Prose by Sri Aurobindo

I bow to thee, Mother,

richly-watered, richly-fruited,

cool with the winds of the south,

dark with the crops of the harvests,

the Mother !

Hey strands rejoicing in the glory of the moonlight,

her lands clothed beautifully with her trees in flowering bloom,

sweet of laughter, sweet of speech,

the Mother, giver of boons, giver of bliss !

Terrible with the clamorous shout of seventy million throats,

and the sharpness of sworeds raised in twice seventy million hands,

Who sayeth to thee, Mother, that thou art weak ?

Holder of multitudinous strength,

I bow to her who saves,

to her who drives from her the armies of her foemen,

the Mother !

TRanslator’s Note

It is difficult to translate the National Anthem of Bengal into verse in another language owing to its unique union of sweetness, simple directness and high poetic force. All attemps in this direction have been failures. In order, therefore, to bring the reader unacquainted with Bengali nearer to the exact force of the original, I give the translation in prose line by line.

Thou art knowledge, thou art conduct

thou our heart, thou our soul,

for thou art the life in our body,

in the arm thou art might, O Mother,

in the heart, O Mother, thou art love and faith.

It is thy image we raise in every temple.

For thou art Durga holding her ten weapons of war,

Kamala at play in the lotuses

and Speech, the goddess, giver of all lore,

To thee I bow !

I bow to three, goddess of wealth, pure and peerless,

richly-watered, richly-fruited, the Mother !

I bow to thee Mother

dark-hued, candid,

sweetly smiling, jewelled and adorned,

the holder of wealth, the lady of plenty

the Mother !

Bande Mataram

Translated by Ram Sharma*

Mother, to thee I bow !

Rich with fine streams and fruits art thou !

Cool breezes, cornfields green, are thine,

Mother mine !

The silver thrilling moonlight night,

Gay groves with blooms and flowers bedight !

Sweet smiles, mellifluous speech, are thine,

Giver of bliss and boons benign

Mother mine !

With many million ardent throats,

Singing thy praise with swelling notes

With many million sturdy hands,

Defending thee with sharpen’d brands,

How art thou weak, when these are thine,

Mother mine !

Yes, might immense is thine,

From throng on throng of ruthless foes,

From perils dire, and whelming woes,

Defender and Deliverer thou !

To thee I bow,

Mother mine !

Wisdom and Righteousness thou art !

Thou, sovereign spirit of the heart

And vital air within !

Thou givest vigour to the arm.

And to the breast devotion warm ;

In every home, in every shrine,

The image all adore is thine,

Mother mine !

Thou, ten-armed Durga, whom fell demons fear !

Thou, lotus-ranging Lakshmi, ever dear !

Goddess of Art, bright Saraswati thou !

To thee I bow !

O Fortune’s Pow’r divine !

Faultlessly fair,

Beyond compare,

Rich with fine streams and fruits art thou,

Mother mine !

Mother, to thee I bow !

With robe of green, devoid of guile,

With grace adorne’d and lovely smile,

Earth ever bounteous, thou !

Nourisher, cherisher benign

Mother mine !

Bande mataram

Translated by Harinath De*

Here is a fairly literal version of this national song, by an esteemed correspondent1 of our, keeping as far as possible the spirit and rhyme-system of the original …

“Mother, hail !

Thou with sweet springs flowing,

Thou fair fruits bestowing,

Cool with zephyrs blowing,

Green with corn-crops growing,

Mother, hail !

Thou of the shivering-joyous moon-blanched night,

Thou with a fair groups of flowering tree-clumps

bright,

Sweetly smiling,

Speech-beguiling,

Pouring bliss and blessing,

Mother, hail !

Though now seventy million voices through

thy mouth sonorous shout,

Though twice seventy million hands hold

thy trenchant sword-blades out,

Yet, with all this power now,

Mother, wherefore powerless thou ?

Holder thou of myriad might,

I salute thee, saviour bright,

Thou who dost all foes affright,

Mother, hail !

Thou sole creed and wisdom art,

Thou our very mind and heart,

And the life-breath in our bodies,

Thou, as strength in arms of men,

Thou, as faith, in hearts, dost reign,

And the form from fane to fane

Thine, O Goddess !

For, thou hast the ten-armed Durga’s power.

Riches thrones thee in her lotus-bower,

Wisdom thee with deity doth dower,

Mother, hail !

Lotus-throned one, rivalless,

Radiant in thy spotlessness,

Thou whose fruits and waters bless

Mother, hail !

Hail, thou, verdant, unbeguiling,

Hail, O decked one, sweetly smilling,

Ever bearing,

Ever rearing,

Mother, hail.”

Bande mataram

Translated by Naresh Chandra Sengupta

Hail thee mother ! To her I bow,

Who with sweetest water o’erflows

With dainty fruits is rich and endowed

And cooling whom the south wind blows ;

Who’s green with crops as on her grow ;

To such a mother down I bow !

With silver moon beams smile her nights

And trees that in their bloom abound

Adorn her ; and her face doth beam

With sweetest smiles, sweet’s her sound !

Joy and bliss she doth bestow ;

To such a mother down I bow.

Resounding with triumphal shouts

From seventy million voices bold

With devotion served by twice

As many hands that ably hold.

The sharp and shining rapier bold

—Thou a weakling we are told !1

Proud in strength and prowess thou art,

Redeemer of thy children thou ;

Chastiser of aggressive foes ;

Mother, to thee thy child I bow.

Thou art knowledge, thou my faith,

Thou my heart and thou my mind,

Nay more, thou art the vital air

That moves my body from behind.

Of my hands thou art the strength

At my heart devotion thou,

In each temple and each shrine,

To thy image it is we bow.

Durga bold who wields her arms

With half a score of hands,

1. Another reading would give : “why art thou so weak with so such strength ?”

The science-goddess, Vani too,

And Lakshmi who on lotus stands,

What are they but, mother thou,

To thee in all these forms I bow !

To thee ! Fortune-giver, that art

To fault unknown, beyond compare,

Who dost with sweetest waters flow

And on thy children in thy care

Dainty fruits dost rich bestow,

To thee, mother, to thee I bow !

To thee I bow, that art so green

And so rich bedecked ; with smile

Thy face doth grow ; thou dost sustain

And hold us—still unknown to guile !

Hail thee mother ! To thee I bow !*
