Papaya Recipes (Peper daalnaa)

Here are a couple of pepe (papaya) recipes from my mother, Pratima Gupta.

Peper daalnaa

  1. 2 large potatoes diced
  2. equal quantity of diced green papayas
  3. 2 medium tomatoes, chopped finely.
  4. 1 bay leaf
  5. 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  6. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  7. 2 green chillies

Method:

  1. Fry the potatoes and papayas lightly and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in pan.
  3. Add the cumin seeds, bay leaf.
  4. Next add the green chillies and ginger and fry for about one minute in high heat.
  5. Add tomatoes and stir till a paste is formed.
  6. Add potatoes and green papaya and cook over medium heat with a little water, till tender.
  7. Sugar and salt to taste.
  8. Generally this dish calls for a liberal addition of sugar.

Peper chechki

  1. 1/2 a coconut grated
  2. Grate one medium sized papaya
  3. 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  4. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds.
  5. two green chillies

Method:

  1. Heat oil. Add the chillies, ginger and cumin and fry over high heat for one minute.
  2. Add the coconut and fry over medium heat.
  3. Add the papaya.
  4. Stir for a couple of minutes, add a little water and cook over medium heat till all the water dries off.
  5. Fry for about 3 minutes over medium heat, stirring. Salt and sugar to taste.
