অতঃপর তালূত যখন সৈন্য-সামন্ত নিয়ে বেরুল, তখন বলল, নিশ্চয় আল্লাহ তোমাদিগকে পরীক্ষা করবেন একটি নদীর মাধ্যমে। সুতরাং যে লোক সেই নদীর পানি পান করবে সে আমার নয়। আর যে, লোক তার স্বাদ গ্রহণ করলো না, নিশ্চয়ই সে আমার লোক। কিন্তু যে লোক হাতের আঁজলা ভরে সামান্য খেয়ে নেবে তার দোষঅবশ্য তেমন গুরুতর হবে না। অতঃপর সবাই পান করল সে পানি, সামান্য কয়েকজন ছাড়া। পরে তালূত যখন তা পার হলো এবং তার সাথে ছিল মাত্র কয়েকজন ঈমানদার, তখন তারা বলতে লাগল, আজকের দিনে জালূত এবং তার সেনাবাহিনীর সাথে যুদ্ধ করার শক্তি আমাদের নেই, যাদের ধারণা ছিল যে, আল্লাহর সামনে তাদের একদিন উপস্থিত হতে হবে, তারা বার বার বলতে লাগল, সামান্য দলই বিরাট দলের মোকাবেলায় জয়ী হয়েছে আল্লাহর হুকুমে। আর যারা ধৈর্য্যশীল আল্লাহ তাদের সাথে রয়েছেন।
Then when Talût (Saul) set out with the army, he said: ”Verily! Allâh will try you by a river. So whoever drinks thereof, he is not of me, and whoever tastes it not, he is of me, except him who takes (thereof) in the hollow of his hand.” Yet, they drank thereof, all, except a few of them. So when he had crossed it (the river), he and those who believed with him, they said: ”We have no power this day against Jalût (Goliath) and his hosts.” But those who knew with certainty that they were to meet their Lord, said: ”How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allâh’s Leave?” And Allâh is with As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.).
فَلَمَّا فَصَلَ طَالُوتُ بِالْجُنُودِ قَالَ إِنَّ اللّهَ مُبْتَلِيكُم بِنَهَرٍ فَمَن شَرِبَ مِنْهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي وَمَن لَّمْ يَطْعَمْهُ فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي إِلاَّ مَنِ اغْتَرَفَ غُرْفَةً بِيَدِهِ فَشَرِبُواْ مِنْهُ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً مِّنْهُمْ فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهُ هُوَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ مَعَهُ قَالُواْ لاَ طَاقَةَ لَنَا الْيَوْمَ بِجَالُوتَ وَجُنودِهِ قَالَ الَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلاَقُو اللّهِ كَم مِّن فِئَةٍ قَلِيلَةٍ غَلَبَتْ فِئَةً كَثِيرَةً بِإِذْنِ اللّهِ وَاللّهُ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ
Falamma fasala talootu bialjunoodi qala inna Allaha mubtaleekum binaharin faman shariba minhu falaysa minnee waman lam yatAAamhu fa-innahu minnee illa mani ightarafa ghurfatan biyadihi fashariboo minhu illa qaleelan minhum falamma jawazahu huwa waallatheena amanoo maAAahu qaloo la taqata lana alyawma bijaloota wajunoodihi qala allatheena yathunnoona annahum mulaqoo Allahi kam min fi-atin qaleelatin ghalabat fi-atan katheeratan bi-ithni Allahi waAllahu maAAa alssabireena
YUSUFALI: When Talut set forth with the armies, he said: “Allah will test you at the stream: if any drinks of its water, He goes not with my army: Only those who taste not of it go with me: A mere sip out of the hand is excused.” but they all drank of it, except a few. When they crossed the river,- He and the faithful ones with him,- they said: “This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces.” but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: “How oft, by Allah’s will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Allah is with those who steadfastly persevere.”
PICKTHAL: And when Saul set out with the army, he said: Lo! Allah will try you by (the ordeal of) a river. Whosoever therefore drinketh thereof he is not of me, and whosoever tasteth it not he is of me, save him who taketh (thereof) in the hollow of his hand. But they drank thereof, all save a few of them. And after he had crossed (the river), he and those who believed with him, they said: We have no power this day against Goliath and his hosts. But those who knew that they would meet Allah exclaimed: How many a little company hath overcome a mighty host by Allah’s leave! Allah is with the steadfast.
SHAKIR: So when Talut departed with the forces, he said: Surely Allah will try you with a river; whoever then drinks from it, he is not of me, and whoever does not taste of it, he is surely of me, except he who takes with his hand as much of it as fills the hand; but with the exception of a few of them they drank from it. So when he had crossed it, he and those who believed with him, they said: We have today no power against Jalut and his forces. Those who were sure that they would meet their Lord said: How often has a small party vanquished a numerous host by Allah’s permission, and Allah is with the patient.
KHALIFA: When Saul took command of the troops, he said, “GOD is putting you to the test by means of a stream. Anyone who drinks from it does not belong with me – only those who do not taste it belong with me – unless it is just a single sip.” They drank from it, except a few of them. When he crossed it with those who believed, they said, “Now we lack the strength to face Goliath and his troops.” Those who were conscious of meeting GOD said, “Many a small army defeated a large army by GOD’s leave. GOD is with those who steadfastly persevere.”

২৪৯। অতঃপর যখন তালূত সৈন্যবাহিনীসহ বের হলো, সে তখন বলেছিলো, “আল্লাহ্ তোমাদের এক নদী দ্বারা পরীক্ষা করবেন ২৮৪ কেউ যদি এর পানি পান করে তবে সে আমার সেনাবাহিনীর সাথে অগ্রসর হবে না। কেবল তারাই আমার সাথে অগ্রসর হবে যারা তা থেকে পান করবে না। [অবশ্য] এক গন্ডুষ পানি যে পান করবে তাঁকে ক্ষমা করা হবে।” কিন্তু তাদের মাঝে স্বল্প সংখ্যক ব্যতীত সকলেই তা পান করলো। সে এবং তাঁর সঙ্গী ঈমানদারগণ যখন উহা [নদী] অতিক্রম করলো, তখন তারা বলেছিলো, “আজকে আমরা জালুত ও তাঁর সেনাবাহিনীর সাথে শক্তিতে পেরে উঠবো না ২৮৫।” কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে যাদের আল্লাহ্র সাথে সাক্ষাৎ সম্বন্ধে দৃঢ় প্রত্যয় ছিলো তারা বলেছিলো, ” আল্লাহ্র ইচ্ছায় বার বার কি ক্ষুদ্র দল বৃহৎ দলকে পরাভুত করে নাই ?” যারা দৃঢ়তার সাথে অধ্যাবসায়ী হয়, আল্লাহ্ তাদের সাথে থাকেন।
২৮৪। যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে সবচেয়ে বড় প্রয়োজন হচ্ছে সৈনিকের শৃঙ্খলার। সেনাপতির আদেশ হবে শিরোধার্য। যদি যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে সাধারণ সৈনিকেরা সেনাপতির আদেশ লঙ্ঘন করে এবং খেয়াল খুশীমত চলে; তবে সৈন্য সংখ্যা যত বেশীই হোক না কেন সে যুদ্ধ জয়ের আশা সুদূর পরাহত। এ রকম উচ্ছৃঙ্খল সৈনিক থাকার থেকে না থাকাই ভালো। এরা পারে শুধু বিশৃঙ্খলা ও ত্রাসের সৃষ্টি করতে। তালুত ছিলেন আল্লাহ্ প্রদত্ত জ্ঞানে সমৃদ্ধ। উত্তপ্ত গরমে পদব্রজে দুর্গম পথ অতিক্রমের পরে স্বাভাবিকভাবে সবাই পিপাসায় ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়বে। সে সময়ে ছোট নদী অতিক্রান্ত করার সময়ে স্বাভাবিকভাবে সবাই পানি পান করতে চাইবে। সত্যিকার ভাবে ইহুদীরা তালুতের (সেনাপতি) অনুগত কিনা এটা পরীক্ষা করার জন্য তালুত হুকুম জারী করলেন যে, কেউ যেনো নদী থেকে পানি পান না করে। এটা আল্লাহ্র পরীক্ষা। যারা পানি পান করবে তারা যুদ্ধে অংশগ্রহণ করতে পারবে না। এবং অধিকাংশ ইহুদী এই পরীক্ষায় ব্যর্থতার পরিচয় দিল। স্বল্প সংখ্যাক এই পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হতে সমর্থ হয়েছিল।
[উপদেশঃ প্রয়োজনের সময়ে খুব নগন্য সংখ্যক লোকই এগিয়ে আসে। উপরন্তু তখন কিছু লোকের অসহযোগ অন্যান্য লোককেও বিচলিত করে।]
২৮৫। যদিও নগণ্যসংখ্যক লোক বিশ্বস্ত ছিল তালুতের নেতৃত্বে। কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যেও বিভক্তি ছিল। তালুতের সেনাবাহিনীর মধ্যে একদল ছিল অসম্পূর্ণ ঈমানদার, যারা পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হতে পারে নাই। দ্বিতীয় দল : ঈমানদার যারা পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হয়েছিলো ঠিকই কিন্তু যখন জালুতের (Goliath) বিরাট বাহিনীর সম্মুখীন হলো, তখন নিজেদের সংখ্যা কম বলে চিন্তা করেছিলো এবং তৃতীয় দল ছিল পূর্ণ ঈমানদার, যারা পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হয়েছেন এবং নিজেদের সংখ্যা লঘুষ্টতার কথাও চিন্তা করেন নাই। কারণ তাদের ভরসা ছিল একমাত্র আল্লাহ। কারণ তারা জানে যে তারা ন্যায় ও সত্যের জন্য যুদ্ধ করছে। এবং যারা ন্যায় ও সত্যের জন্য যুদ্ধ করে তাদের পক্ষে আল্লাহ্ যুদ্ধ করেন। সুতরাং তাদের কোনও ভয় নাই।
উপদেশঃ সংসারের যুদ্ধ ক্ষেত্রে প্রতিকূল শক্তি দেখে ভয় না পেয়ে আল্লাহ্র উপরে ভরসা স্থাপন করা পূর্ণ ঈমানের লক্ষণ। এখানে প্রতিকূল অর্থাৎ অন্যায় অবিচারের শক্তি ও ক্ষমতা দেখে ভয় না পেয়ে ন্যায় ও সত্য পথে আল্লাহ্র উপরে বিশ্বাস স্থাপন করে অগ্রসর হলে আল্লাহ্র সাহায্য সুনিশ্চিত।
